The Independence Monument
The Independence Monument (Vimean Ekareach) in Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia, was built in 1958. It stands on the intersection of Norodom Boulevard and Sihanouk Boulevard in the centre of the city. It is in the form of a lotus-shaped stupa, of the style seen at the great Khmer temple at Angkor Wat and other Khmer historical sites. The Independence Monument was designed by the influential Cambodian modern architect Vann Molyvann.
During national celebrations, The Independence Monument is the center of activity. A ceremonial flame on the interior pedestal is often lit by a royal or high official on these occasions, and floral tributes line the stairs. Every year, The Independence Monument is visited by foreigners and locals alike

Cambodia's Royal Palace
Cambodia's Royal Palace complex was begun by King Norodom (1834-1904) in 1886, when the capital was moved to Phnom Penh. Most buildings were completed before World War I, with involvement by French administrators and Thai designers and architects. French influence can be seen in the formal gardens which enhance the palace, and there are some European-style buildings on the grounds.
The building shown in this photo is the Throne Hall, which was originally built in wood. The present structure dates from 1919. Imitating the face towers at Angkor, four faces overlook the complex from the main spire high above the roof (closeup), whose eaves are braced by flying celestials.

Silver Pagoda
Silver Pagoda (or the temple of the Emerald Buddha), formerly a wooden building, was rebuilt in 1962 in concrete and marble. The pagoda is floored with over 5000 silver tiles each weighing 1 kilo. It is famous for its 90 kg solid gold Buddha made in 1907 and an emerald Buddha said to be made of baccarant crystal. Sharing the pagoda are many other interesting artifacts and jewels and was one of the few temples to remain intact during the Khmer Rouge regime. Open daily from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Entrance fee US$ 3 per person. Camera fee US$2. Video fee US$ 5. Photography is allowed in the outside exhibition areas only. Please remember that exposed knees and shoulders are considered disrespectful.

National Museum
National Museum was built in 1917 in traditional Khmer style and inaugurated in 1920 by King Sisowat. The National Museum houses the world's foremost collection of ancient Khmer archeological, religious, and artistic artifacts from the 4th to the 13th centuries. There are over 5000 pieces and is the repository of the Kingdom's cultural wealth. In addition, the roof space is home to the largest bat colony in the world living in an artificial structure. Every evening these bats flock out of the roof and swarm around in the sky before searching for food. Open daily from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Photography is forbidden inside.

Wat Phnom
Wat Phnom is a revered place of worship for all Khmers and is the namesake of the capital. The original pagoda was built in 1373 to house four Buddha statues said to have been deposited by the waters of the Mekong. The temple is the focal point for many Buddhist ceremonies especially Pchum Ben and his highly revered by Phompenh residents. Wat Phnom has a unique atmosphere and is surrounded by various fortune tellers, mystics, faith healers and elephant rides around the site are available.

Tuol Sleng Museum
Tuol Sleng Museum, known as the Museum of Genocidal Crimes it was used by the Khmer Rouge as a detention and torture center in the late 1970. Today the building houses exhibits, paintings and photographs of many of the victims. Visitors can see the crude cells built in the classrooms and the torture devices used to extract confessions in Stalinesque purges of the regime. Open daily from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Central Market (Psah Thmei)
The
Phnom Penh Central Market is housed in a colonial-style building in the
heart of the Cambodian capital. Its Khmer name Psar Thmay translates as
"new market", although it is more commonly referred in English as
Central Market.
The Psar Thmay was built in 1937 during the French colonial period, in Art Deco style, and is painted bright ochre. It consists of four wings dominated by a central dome. Within the four wings and around the compound outside are on sale almost anything you can think of, including electronic equipment, clothing, watches, bags, suitcases, dried and fresh foodstuff, jewellery, clothes from cheap t-shirts to krama (Khmer scarves), pseudo-antique, books including photocopied travel guides and lots of souvenirs.
Hours:
Daily 5:00am-5:00pm
The Russian Market is popular among tourists, local expatriates and Cambodians alike. Located in the southern portion of Phnom Penh it is so called because of its popularity among Russian expatriates during the 1980s. | ![]() |
![]() | The
market is has many things of interest to many people. Inside you can
find, all manner of hardware goods, drinks and cooked food, antique
furniture, traditional carvings and handicraft, hand-woven silk, music,
movie and computer CDs, silverware, gems, books and maps, backpacks and
bags and shoes and clothing.
Some shoes and clothing originate as out-takes from various garment factories. Hence some top labels can be found at very reasonable prices. |
Many
local artisans use the market as an outlet to the tourist market. You
can find the new traditional handicrafts interspersed with older genuine
antique carvings.
You can often see provincial artisans carrying their goods which they have brought with them, sometimes as far away as Mondol Kiri and Rottana Kiri, to sell to the Russian Market retailers. This is especially true just prior to the 'Water Festival' (or 'Boat Races') which usually occurs around mid-November every year. The newer wooden carvings may tend to split once they are taken to a less humid climate. Most retailers will repair these items in the first year after purchase if you have made an agreement during bargaining. | ![]() |
